KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Coach Butch Jones was ready to treat the fans to information about Team 121 on Friday, putting four of his assistants in front of media for nearly an hour.
Offensive coordinator Larry Scott, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, assistant head coach and defensive line coach Brady Hoke and quarterbacks coach Mike Canales provided a look inside this season’s team.
All four of those coaches, as pointed out by new Tennessee SID Zach Stipe, have been head coaches at some point in their careers. Each handled their portion of the press conference as such, showing a mastery of the public speaking skills needed for successful impromptu interviews.
Here are 10 insightful quotes from Friday’s press conference at the Ray and Lucy Hand Digital Studio:
Brady Hoke asst. head coach, defensive line
“It’s our job when Coach (Jones) asks that we give him our experiences, we can help when it becomes a matter of making some tough decisions, as just another person who has gone though it.”
“They’ve (defensive line) done a nice job this summer when you look at some strength gains and some body gains …. When Shy Tuttle gets back to full form, I’m really looking forward to that. He’s done a great job being one of the leaders.”
Larry Scott, offensive coordinator
“With our offense now, it’s the versatility to be what we need to be when we need to be it to be successful.”
“It all goes back to the players. You promise their parents in living rooms that you’ll develop them into men and football players. It’s also about doing all you can to restore what this is all about, which is winning.”
“We’re gonna do what our players can do, and what they do very well. If that means the package is big, it’s big, if it’s small, it’s small. At the end of the day we’re going to do what they can execute.”
Bob Shoop, defensive coordinator
“A healthy Darrin Kirkland is critical.”
“There’s not a day we don’t enjoy working with each other. We’ve assembled a big-league staff.”
“What we learned last year, and the lesson I learned personally, is you can never have enough guys. We have to continue to develop depth, because in this league you never know.”
Mike Canales, Quarterbacks coach
“They (quarterbacks) understand as a leader they have to step on toes when it’s needed and lead from the front and push from the back, as well. This team is looking for someone to step up in that position.”
“When Coach Jones is ready and the time is right we’ll make that (quarterback) decision. What’s important is that they push themselves and they compete and not compare, that’s really important. I thought we got past that in the spring, we got better at that.”
