KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — You want to know what Butch Jones is thinking about entering Tennessee football camp?
The Vols’ fifth-year head coach was asked that very question, and it came down to two things for him: consistency, and competition.
Tennessee has four weeks to prepare for its season-opening game at 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Atlanta against Georgia Tech.
The players report at 2:30 p.m. today (Friday).
“First thing we talk about is overall consistency,” Jones said Friday. “How is this team going to be when we get through the grind of training camp and it’s practice 16 or practice 18?
“So, just consistency and the competitive depth, and seeing which freshmen will be able to help us.”
Jones trumpeted the gains Tennessee made it the weight room:
• 21 players can power clean 300-plus pounds
• 10 players have squatted 500 pounds or more
• Current players occupy 64 spots on the Vols’ all-time weightlifting charts, of top five lifts/times
• Of those 64 spots occupied by current players, 15 are from true freshmen
“Our true freshmen have come in and elevated the level of competition,” Jones said. “But I’m excited about the leadership I’ve seen from the older players and how they’ve helped develop those freshmen into our style of players.”
