HOOVER, Ala. — Butch Jones wasn’t exactly a media darling at SEC Media Days on Monday, but apparently he won the press conference.
SEC Network anchor Dari Nowkhah and others praised Jones’ media day appearance at the Wynfrey Hotel, and the independently operated VolNation message board seemed to agree.
“We just had Butch Jones on set with us,” Nowkhah said. “I thought what we just saw from him was the best media moments we’ve seen in five years form Butch Jones. I thought he was fantastic.”
Former LSU defensive lineman Anthony McFarland agreed, saying “I thought he was outstanding,” but added that if Jones doesn’t win the SEC East Division “the rumors are there.”
Newly hired SEC Network analyst and former Vanderbilt QB Jordan Rodgers also was impressed with Jones’ approach.
“I feel like he’s less focused about the outside noise of proving Tennessee,” Rodgers said, “and more focused about building the inside.”
Jones made it clear during his presentation that he was proud of his team’s accomplishments on and off the field, mentioning the record as well as APR scores, but added, “There’s so much more out there to be accomplished.”
The VolNation message thread, started by the site’s owner and senior administrator, began with the following statement:
“As we all know, the media often bashes Butch for his clichés and coach speak (not saying it’s undeserved at times). I think it’s worth pointing out the overwhelmingly positive reviews he received for his appearances at SEC Media Day this afternoon.”
