Tennessee football junior defensive back Rashaan Gauden has enjoyed an All-SEC type of season, and he could be getting some snaps at safety against Alabama if the need arises.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee defensive end Darrell Taylor will remain suspended for the Alabama game, and Coach Butch Jones dashed any remaining hopes that receiver Jauan Jennings would return this season.

A tough transition season for the Vols (3-3, 0-3 SEC) figures to get tougher at No. 1-ranked Alabama (7-0, 4-0) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Jones updated the injury status of his team on Wednesday, revealing that the safety position has lost yet another player for the season, as freshman Cheyenne Labruzza is out with a knee injury.

Tennessee lost senior Todd Kelly Jr. to a knee injury before the third game of the season at Florida, and fellow senior safety and return man Evan Berry hasn’t played since the Vols opened the season with  42-41 double-overtime win over Georgia Tech.

Berry has returned to practice this week, but Jones said his status remains questionable.

Jones said Tennessee junior nickleback Rashaan Gaulden could get work at safety ,and that true freshman Theo Jackson continues to show improvement.

The defensive end position is also thin with Taylor out, as No. 3 defensive end Deandre Johnson remains questionable with a shoulder injury.

“Darrell Taylor will remain suspended indefinitely at this time,” Jones said. “He’s doing the necessary steps and making great progress, but he’ll still remain suspended for this game.”

Tennessee tight end Jakob Johnson, arguably the team’s best open-field blocker, has returned to practice and will be available for Saturday’s game in Tuscaloosa.

Jones said senior cornerback Justin Martin, who suffered an ankle injury in last Saturday’s 15-9 loss to South Carolina will return to practice Wednesday afternoon.
