KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee redshirt freshman guard Venzell Boulware will not play in Music City Bowl against Nebraska due to academic issues, Vols coach Butch Jones announced Tuesday.
“Venzell Boulware will not be available for the bowl game due to academics,” he said.
“Venzell is a great young man. He’ll be better for it. He has still practiced and he’s had one of the best bowl practices that we’ve had, but due to academics, he will not be available.”
With senior Dylan Wiesman sidelined with an ankle injury, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound offensive lineman started Tennessee’s final two games at right guard. Boulware made three total starts in seven games in 2016.
Jones said Boulware is the team’s lone academic causality and that Boulware will available in the spring.
“He understands. It’s going back and where did we go wrong. How do we make things better?” Jones explained.
“What I’ve liked about him is he’s been very realistic and upfront. We all know he’s a great person. Like I said, it’s just like your children. Sometimes it takes something like that. He’ll be better for it and I know he’ll bounce back.”
Aside from depth, the starting offensive line will not be impacted by the loss, Jones said, as Wiesman is expected to return to the lineup against Nebraska.
