KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin was ejected for targeting late in the first quarter of the Volunteers season-opener against Appalachian State.
UT’s team captain and leading tackler the last two seasons drilled Mountaineers punt returner Jaquil Capel on a high, hanging punt. Helmets collided, forcing a bang-bang ruling as Capel caught the punt going to the ground.
However, upon review, officials upheld the ruling and ejected Maybin. The linebacker must sit out the first quarter of the Battle of Bristol against Virginia Tech next weekend.
Junior linebacker Cortez McDowell replaced Reeves-Maybin at weak-side linebacker.
