Last week, Clinton (Miss.) tailback and top Tennessee target Cam Akers earned his 5th star at The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Oregon.
Akers was then named to the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger’s Dandy Dozen on Tuesday, and the Volunteers made sure to quickly congratulate the nation’s No. 12 overall prospect on the honor.
The 5-foot-11, 213-pound tailback tweeted a picture the Tennessee staff sent him, with Akers adding a shoutout to Vols running back coach Robert Gillespie.

The Dandy Dozen recognizes the best players in the State of Mississippi, and like Akers, Gillespie, who hails from Hattiesburg, Miss., and played at Florida from 1998-01, was also named to the Dandy Dozen in 1997.
Tennessee is currently battling Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Florida State, Ole Miss and others for the 5-star’s services next season. Akers, who plays quarterback in high school, rushed for over 1,400 yards last season and ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at The Opening Finals.
Overall, he dominated testing at The Opening, finishing with the third-best Nike+ Football Rating — 140.13 — in the country.
