Saturday’s Tennessee-Southern Miss game marked a golden opportunity for the Volunteers to get back into the win column, and they took full advantage
Tennessee (4-5) had been reeling after losing its previous four games in two blowouts and two last-minute defeats. Conference USA member Southern Miss (5-4) brought a solid defense to Knoxville, but the Vols eventually broke through. The Golden Eagles entered the game ranked No. 27 in the FBS in yards allowed (332 per game) and No. 36 in the nation in points allowed (21.3 per game).

Tennessee sophomore feature receiver Marquez Callaway left the game with an apparent right ankle injury at the 11:15 mark of the third quarter.
True freshman Will McBride started the second half at quarterback, with redshirt freshman QB Jarrett Guarantano unable to play on his injured ankle.
Tennessee true freshman offensive lineman Riley Locklear saw his first collegiate action on account of an injury to redshirt freshman Devante Brooks, who made his first career start at right tackle.

Aaron Medley hits 38-yard field goal to extend the Vols’ lead and cap a 12-play, 68-yard scoring drive.
True freshman QB Will McBride came off the sidelines during the drive for three snaps in relief of Jarrett Guarantano, who is playing with a heavily taped right ankle.
