Jeff with the two-part question, but I’ll answer the first half today. I did write a good bit about the Quay Walker situation in Smoke Signals on Thursday. There is hope for the Vols, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.
On to the running back question, losing John Kelly is, of course, a blow to the depth in the backfield. Ty Chandler did show great flashes in his freshman season. Carlin Flis-Aime and Tim Jordan are also coming back to fill out the backfield.
Coach Jeremy Pruitt and the new coaching staff are looking to the Class of 2018 to bolster the position.
The Vols have one signee in Jeremy Banks. The Cordova (Tenn.) High School product rushed for almost 2,000 yards and 32 touchdowns this season. He’s a productive back who gets moving downfield quickly. There isn’t a lot of side-to-side action in his game.
Anthony Grant committed to Tennessee over the summer. He has said that if the new coaching staff will have him, he wants to be a Vol. It was never his plan to sign during the early period. He might lose his spot depending on how the rest of the recruits shake out.
Tennessee is still pursuing other options. My thought is for a third back and not as a replacement for Grant.
Tennessee has recently offered running backs Tavion Thomas and Maurice Washington.
Thomas is an Oklahoma commit who was supposed to sign during the early signing period. The 3-star from Dunbar, Ohio, held off and will take an official visit to Knoxville at some point.
Washington is playing in the Under Armour All-America Game Thursday night at 6 p.m. ET. It’ll be a time for him to showcase his skills and maybe gain a little more interest.
The 3-star back rushed for 1,253 yards and 15 touchdowns last season for Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill, Texas) School.
It’s clear the coaching wants to add another running back to the class.
