Tennessee’s Kyle Phillips out against UGA, Pig Howard uncertain
Tennessee will have to overcome a slew of injuries when it meets No. 19 UGA on Saturday afternoon.
Vols coach Butch Jones announced that freshman defensive end Kyle Phillips is out this week with a shoulder injury during his Monday press conference. Additionally, senior wide receiver Pig Howard is out indefinitely, as he continues to be slowed down by ankle and elbow injuries while also dealing with a concussion.
Phillips was the only player officially ruled out in advance of this week’s game, and Jones anticipates he the defensive end will be able to return after the Alabama game when Tennessee has an off week.
Howard has yet to pass any concussion tests and Jones said it will be “a matter of time” before the wideout is cleared.
While the team looks to be down those two players for this week’s showdown with UGA, it should have junior offensive lineman Dylan Wiesman and junior wide receiver Marquez North.
Wiesman left last week’s game against Arkansas with an ankle injury and did not return. According to Jones, he does not have a high-ankle sprain and is available to practice.
If Wiesman is unable to go, Jones said there will be a competition for the starting right guard spot. The two expected to battle for the starting job are freshmen Jack Jones and Venzell Boulware.
Jones has appeared in three games as a true freshman, while Boulware has yet to make an appearance in 2015.
Last week, North was a game-time decision as he dealt with a back injury, but Jones expects the receiver to play against UGA.
