One of the best recruits of the Butch Jones era at Tennessee, 5-star offensive tackle Trey Smith is the no-doubt headliner of Tennessee’s class of 2017 that falls just short of a 247Sports top-10 ranking.
But if Smith has it his way, he’d be sharing the spotlight with another recruit, as he said in an SEC Country exclusive at the Touchdown Club of Atlanta where he was honored for his Bobby Dodd National Lineman of the Year award.
“LaBryan Ray,” Smith said. “I’d be really excited if he came on board.”
Tennessee is one of several SEC teams vying for the services of Ray, 247Sports’ top-ranked strong-side defensive end and top player out of the state of Alabama. Ray is expected to choose between Alabama and Tennessee, the schools he has already visited. Also in the mix: Florida, where he’ll be headed Friday.
It’s no wonder Smith would rather have Ray on his side than have to face him. Ray wreaked havoc his senior season, with 11 sacks and 99 tackles for James Clemens High School in Madison, Ala.
