KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A grim-faced Butch Jones led his team down Peyton Manning Pass, to Phillip Fulmer Way and into Neyland Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Vols (5-3) play host to FCS Tennessee Tech (3-5) at 4 p.m. in a game that will be shown on the SEC Network’s alternative channel this afternoon.
Tennessee looks to break a three-game losing streak against the Golden Eagles. It’s the first time since the 2014 season that Jones has lost three in a row. In 2014, the Vols fell to Oklahoma (34-10), Georgia (35-32) and Florida (10-9) that season.
Many of the Tennessee players interacted with the crowd, clearly excited to play in their Homecoming Game.
Jones told his players throughout the week that he wanted them to have fun playing the game again, and he encouraged the team to exercised positive energy, citing a New York Times study on high fives and chest bumps.
Sophomore tailback John Kelly will be making his first start, and Jones has made it clear he plans for many of the younger Vols to get action against Tennessee Tech.
Tennessee dropped a 24-21 decision at South Carolina in its last game.
The past five meetings between the Vols and the Gamecocks have been decided by three points or less, and South Carolina’s win at Williams-Brice Stadium last Saturday snapped what had been a three-game Tennessee win streak in the series.
