New Tennessee athletic director John Currie is eager to work with Butch Jones.
On Tuesday, the Associated Press’ Steve Megargee released a video interview with Currie that included the athletic director’s thoughts on working with Jones. Currie has positive things to say about the coach in the brief clip about the state of the Vols football program.
Check out Currie’s thoughts on the subject below.
“The thing I would say about football is how excited I am to work with Coach Jones. I’ve known him kind of here and there for years and known people that worked with him and respected him greatly at the University of Cincinnati and also at Central Michigan. He and his wife, Barb, have poured their hearts and souls into rebuilding the Tennessee football program. And from a results standpoint, won a bunch of games and some bowl games.”
It will be interesting to see how the relationship between Currie and Jones develops. The upcoming fall will be telling for Jones, who led the Volunteers to their second consecutive 9-4 season in 2016. Tennessee capped the campaign with a victory over Nebraska in the Music City Bowl.
Currie went on to mention how Jones improved the talent level within the Volunteers program.
Tennessee is moving on without quarterback Josh Dobbs and defensive end Derek Barnett, so new stars must assert themselves for the Vols to have a chance to break through in the wide-open SEC East.
