KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Bob Shoop knows the defensive numbers have to get better, and he knows exactly where that starts.

“The SEC uses the term that it’s a line-of-scrimmage league,” the Vols defensive coordinator said Sunday at Tennessee media day. “Being physically tough means winning your 1-on-1 battles up front, being able to dominate and control the line of scrimmage.”

The Vols have yet to hold their first full scrimmage. Butch Jones has tentatively set that for Wednesday, but Shoop, who’s entering his second season with the team, has confidence the defense will be ready thanks to the great offseason work.

“Rock [Gullickson] and his staff have done a great job,” Shoop said of the first-year strength and conditioning coach. “We’ve practiced at a much higher level now than any point of camp last year, and I think everyone is confident.”

Shoop gave a pretty thorough breakdown of the Tennessee defense, specifically highlighting the incoming freshmen who have had good fall camps and could play this season.
