Entering his final season as a broadcaster, CBS play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist has a confession to make about his first game covering SEC football.
Lundquist’s first assignment as the lead play-by-play man for the SEC on CBS was when Florida played Tennessee in Knoxville in 2000. As people who watched that game may recall, it ended in controversial fashion.
With 20 seconds remaining, Florida QB Jesse Palmer threw a pass to WR Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney dropped the ball, but the official on the goal line ruled it a touchdown. Now 16 years later, Lundquist admits that he thinks the pass should have been ruled incomplete.
