Twelve years ago. Florida vs. Tennessee. Neyland Stadium. Thirteen seconds left.
For the win. Hold is good. It’s got enough distance.
He nailed it!
Talk about redemption!
It’s a call Verne Lundquist will never forget. The game, he said in the latest “Storytime with Uncle Verne,” ranks among the top 10 he’s ever called. Tennessee kicker James Wilhoit, mere minutes after missing an extra-point that would have tied the game, lined up on the right hash from 50 yards away. And he nailed it.
“A field goal attempt from five-zero away — 50 yards,” Lundquist remembers. “And we’re talking about a young man who just missed an extra-point wide left.
“He nailed this little puppy. It got inside the right upright. Field goal good from 50 yards to give Tennessee the lead and the win.”
Of the memorable “redemption” call, Lundquist says: “That’s probably reflective of my theological background. My dad was a Lutheran minister, and you never know when those forces are going to come into play.”
But don’t let reading this text rob you of Verne’s voice telling the story himself. Watch the full video below:
