2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Texas A&M is ranked (Week 7)

Texas A&M did not want its second road trip of the season to end like its first.

So, when Florida got the ball back with just less than 1 minute to play in the game Saturday night in Gainesville, Fla., Tyrel Dodson picked off a Feleipe Franks pass to secure the 19-17 victory.

In the season opener at UCLA, Texas A&M blew a 34-point second-half lead and lost, 45-44, when Josh Rosen led the Bruins to the come-from-behind win. But this Texas A&M team appears to have learned from that loss — as well as its 27-19 setback on Oct. 7 to top-ranked Alabama — and is playing well.

So well that the 25 SEC Country voters placed the Aggies fourth in the SEC Country Power Poll — yes, that’s where they were last week — but just two votes behind No. 3 Auburn, which lost to LSU on Saturday.

Florida put together a 4-play, 90-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter with the key play coming on a 79-yard run by Franks. Other than that, the Gators didn’t manage more than 26 yards on a second-half drive, and Texas A&M forced them to go three-and-out three times.

Texas A&M didn’t have its best offensive showing of the season, either, making the defense’s effort that more important. Texas A&M managed just 10 first downs and 263 total yards. Quarterback Kellen Mond completed 8 of 24 passes for 180 yards that included completions of 30, 33, 40 and 42 yards. Mond added 52 rushing yards and a touchdown, but the Aggies averaged 2.2 yards per rush.

The Aggies (5-2, 3-1 in the SEC) are off this week before returning for three consecutive home games, beginning Oct. 28 vs. Mississippi State, followed by Auburn and New Mexico visiting College Station, Texas.
