After the controversy over Kirk Herbstreit’s Auburn sleeper pick, CBS Sports’ Gary Danielson has a sleeper pick of his own that will surely create a stir.
During a Thursday afternoon media teleconference, Danielson said Texas A&M has a chance to win the SEC and compete for a playoff spot.
“Texas A&M is my sleeper team in the SEC,” Danielson said. “I do think there’s eight different teams that, if things start to break their way, they could win the SEC. And if you win the SEC, you’re going to be in the playoff. There’s three in the East and there’s at least five in the West.”
The Aggies were picked to finish fourth in the league by the media in the SEC preseason poll. Alabama and LSU are the most popular picks to win the SEC West and go to the playoff. His broadcast partner, Verne Lundquist, said he agreed.
As Herbstreit noted, naming a team a “sleeper” is not the same as picking a team to win. Danielson, however, said Texas A&M’s schedule lines up well for the Aggies to have a chance.
“A&M has got a very unique schedule this year,” Danielson said. “And if they’re able to get off (well) at the start–they’ve got Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU at home–they can lose to Alabama and somehow figure a way to still be in the hunt in this thing, I think.”
