Johnny Manziel made a not-so-subtle call for the NCAA to pay players.
On Wednesday, the former Texas A&M quarterback dropped a pointed tweet in which he wrote, “IT’S TIME! The NCAA is a joke..” He used an old TIME cover from 2013 to make his point, which was a savvy marketing move by the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Check out his message below:
Manziel is the latest current or former athlete to weigh in on this topic, which became a heated national debate with the FBI’s investigation into college basketball’s underbelly. ESPN analyst Booger McFarland, former Alabama linebacker Ryan Anderson and current Alabama linebacker Christian Miller are a few others who have offered their perspectives on the issue.
Again, it would be a surprise to see the NCAA make a drastic change soon in the way it approaches possible player payment. Still, it’s not out of the question to picture a day when the situation might look different, especially with increased pressure.
Stay tuned. Expect more current and former players to give passionate opinions about this situation.
