The SEC is known for its speed, particularly on defense. Offensive lines have to be on their toes constantly as they handle the constant pressure from fast and strong defensive lineman.
On the edge especially, the SEC has distinguished itself with some of the best linemen in the nation and the most talented defensive players in the country.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein listed the top edge defenders in college football and it has a very distinct SEC flavor to it. The top four guys to watch are all in the SEC.
Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett leads the list with Missouri’s Charles Harris, Alabama’s Tim Williams and LSU’s Arden Key rounding out the first four. Ole Miss’ Marquis Haynes and Tennessee’s Derek Barnett also cracked the 10 to watch.
Garrett is getting a lot of publicity before the season begins as one of the best defensive players in the league. This is just the latest accolade that has gone the Aggies defensive end’s way.
After recording 22.5 sacks in his first two years, Garrett seems set to have another big double-digit sack season again.
SEC defenses will once again be a group to watch. NFL scouts appear to be doing so.
