Sports Illustrated released its Top-10 College Football decisions of the decade on Friday, and several SEC-related events made the list.
Most notably is Texas A&M’s call to leave the Big 12 for greener pastures. The Aggies have had a tumultuous tenure in the SEC, but they netted a Heisman Trophy winner in Johnny Manziel and regularly produce better football teams than they did in the Big 12.
A&M’s presence also opened up recruiting barriers for the conference in Texas, which has paid off in a big way for the SEC.
Also making the list is the timeout Gus Malzahn took before Chris Davis beat Alabama with the famous “kick six” play in 2013. Davis was not on the field ready to return Alabama’s field goal attempt prior to the timeout.
That play to win the Iron Bowl propelled the Tigers into the final BCS National Championship game, which Auburn ultimately lost 34-31 to Florida State.
LSU also makes the list for Les Miles’ aggression on fourth down against Florida in 2007. LSU went for it on fourth down five times against the Tim Tebow-led Gators, including twice on the game-winning drive that ended with less than a minute on the clock.
LSU went on to win the National Championship over Ohio State.
