Texas A&M OC to QB Kyle Allen: Don’t let 3 interceptions game define you
Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen played the worst game of his college career throwing three interceptions, all of which were returned for touchdowns, in Texas A&M’s 41-23 loss to Alabama.
Allen said the last time he remembered throwing three interceptions in a game was during his days as a youth.
“I didn’t deal with it as well in the Pop Warner days as I do now,” Allen told reporters jokingly. “I would be very emotional back then… And then lock myself in the room.”
Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said at Tuesday’s press conference that he told Allen after the game to not let the Alabama loss define him.
“I told him that on Sunday, someone [in the NFL] is going to throw three interceptions,” Spavital said. “And Peyton Manning ended up throwing three interceptions. It happens. Don’t let that [Alabama] game define you. Let’s push forward.”
“I told him [as a joke] that I don’t think you’re ever going to be a part of a three pick-six game for the rest of your career,” Spavital said. “That was a first for me as well.”
Spavital said the best way to move forward after a bad game like that is to address the mistakes on film and talk about why it happened.
“Anybody [watching film after the game] naturally wants to breeze through those [mistakes] but we focused in on them,” Spavital said “[Allen] understands why he threw those interceptions and now it’s just time to move on.”
On top of moving on mentally and emotionally from the loss, physical recovery will also be key for the sophomore quarterback moving forward. Allen was sidelined for one series in the second half after suffering an injury that seemed to be on his shoulder.
“Physically, he’s dinged up,” said Spavital. “I think everybody saw that. He took some shots there.”
Spavital said that Allen knows minor injuries like the one he suffered against Alabama are a part of the game.
“He knows it’s the SEC,” Spavital said. “He’s gonna take some shots. He’s just got to make sure that he gets as much treatment and recovery as possible.”
Allen is expected to start on the road against Ole Miss on Saturday.
