Texas Bowl: Texas A&M-Kansas State keys to the game
What’s at stake for the Aggies?
Texas A&M would hit several milestones with a win tonight. First, a victory would give Kevin Sumlin his fourth bowl win at A&M, moving him into first place in school history ahead of R.C. Slocum. Also, a win would be No. 9 this season and the third time in five seasons the Aggies have reached that total under Sumlin. The Aggies have been good on turf, too — they’re 6-0 under Sumlin.
Under the radar
Don’t dismiss the Wildcats. They are 8-4 with losses to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford and West Virginia. That’s nothing to be ashamed of — and they won their final three games, including road wins against Baylor and TCU. Expect Big 12 sack leader Jordan Willis to get after Trevor Knight’s replacement, Jake Hubenak. K-State QB Jesse Ertz makes the Cats go with his arm (1,560 yards) and legs (945 yards).
Late-season skid …
It’s easy to forget that Texas A&M held the No. 4 spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season. But it lasted all of one week as the Aggies lost to Mississippi State and lost QB Trevor Knight for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. The Aggies went 1-3 to close the season, their only win a lackluster 23-10 victory against UTSA. With all-everything DE Myles Garrett expected to be a high pick in the NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see the Aggies’ motivational level when kickoff arrives.
