Vanderbilt enters the NCAA Tournament on the heels of a strong performance in the SEC Tournament that pushed the Commodores from the tournament bubble all the way to a No. 9 seed.
Playing the nation’s toughest schedule, according to the strength of schedule rater, the Commodores are more than prepared for games against tournament caliber opponents. Vanderbilt defeated Florida three times, and also secured victories against tournament teams Iowa State, Arkansas and South Carolina over the course of a 19-15 season. 7-footer Luke Kornet is as much a threat from the outside as he is in the paint, and is a top-notch defender and senior leader for the Commodores.
The Commodores are the first team to make the tournament field with 15 regular-season losses on its record.
As for Northwestern, many are dubbing this team as America’s sweetheart due to the Wildcats’ first-ever appearance in the tournament. Former Duke assistant Chris Collins, a longtime Duke assistant led the Wildcats to this historic moment in his fourth season with the program.
The Wildcats are led by Bryant McIntosh, who averages 14.4 points and 5.2 assists from the point guard position. Northwestern arrived at the tournament by going 10-8 in the Big Ten and 23-11 overall.
