2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Vanderbilt is ranked (Week 12)

Thomas Neumann

Splat! That’s the sound of Vanderbilt landing on the basement floor in the SEC Country Power Poll.

After five consecutive weeks in the No. 13 spot, the Commodores (4-7, 0-7 SEC) slipped off the bottom rung following their 45-17 home loss to Missouri. It’s the first time this season that Vandy has finished dead last in our rankings.

Yet there is hope, Vandy fans!

The Commodores play rival Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on Saturday. The Volunteers (4-7, 0-7), who check in at No. 13 in our rankings, are the only other SEC team that is winless in conference play. Game time is 4 p.m. ET, and SEC Network has the television broadcast. Vandy has won three of its past five games against the Vols.

Presumably, somebody has to win this game, although these two teams might test that theory.

Vandy coach Derek Mason might be coaching for his job against Tennessee. The Commodores have lost seven of their past eight games, and Mason has a record of 17-31 overall and 5-26 in SEC games during his four seasons in Nashville.

Ralph Webb provided a bright spot for Vandy in Saturday’s game. He ran for 55 yards and a touchdown, becoming the ninth player in SEC history to top 4,000 career rushing yards.

The Commodores began the season ranked No. 13 in the SEC Country Power Poll and climbed as high as No. 6 after beating Kansas State to improve to 3-0 on Sept. 16. They dropped to No. 9 after losing 59-0 to Alabama in Week 4 and skidded to No. 11 after a 38-24 loss at Florida in Week 5. Vandy remained at No. 11 after a 45-14 loss to Georgia in Week 6, then slipped to No. 13 after losing to Ole Miss in Week 7.

Check back each Sunday night to see where Vanderbilt sits in the latest SEC Country Power Poll.
