The bye week probably couldn’t have come at a better time for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Vandy is on a four-game losing streak, a tailspin in which the team has allowed an average of 50 points per game. The most recent loss was a scalding 57-35 defeat at Ole Miss in Week 7, a disappointing outcome in what seemed to be a winnable game.
As badly as the Commodores (3-4, 0-4 SEC) have played recently, they haven’t hit rock bottom in the SEC Country Power Poll — poor Missouri (2-5, 0-4) has made sure of that by bringing up the rear every week this season.
Vanderbilt remains No. 13 this week, but the gap between the Commodores and No. 12 Arkansas shrunk from 33 points to 4 points. Arkansas (2-5, 0-4) suffered a 52-20 home loss to Auburn to drop one slot. Mizzou was unable to climb out of the cellar despite a 68-21 romp over Idaho on Saturday.
The Commodores began the season 3-0 against nonconference opponents, including a win over Kansas State, which was ranked 18th in the nation at the time.
Next up, the Commodores play at South Carolina on Saturday. Kickoff is 4 p.m. ET (3 p.m. CT), and SEC Network has the television broadcast. After that, Vandy and faces Western Kentucky, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee in subsequent weeks.
The Commodores began the season ranked No. 13 in the SEC Country Power Poll and climbed as high as No. 6 after the win over Kansas State on Sept. 16. They dropped to No. 9 after losing 59-0 to Alabama in Week 4 and skidded to No. 11 after a 38-24 loss at Florida in Week 5. Vandy remained at No. 11 after a 45-14 loss to Georgia two weeks ago, then slipped to No. 13 after the loss to Ole Miss.
Check back each Sunday night to see where Vanderbilt sits in the latest SEC Country Power Poll.
