After his most successful season as the head coach at Vanderbilt, Derek Mason wanted to take his coaching to the next level. And he went right to the top.
Mason and his staff attended a couple days of the New England Patriots minicamp earlier this summer, where he got the chance to observe head coach Bill Belichick in his environment.
Mason got an up-close look as he watched Belichick conduct his team, and a couple of things immediately stood out.
“Structure, command of the locker room, team chemistry,” Mason said on SEC Now from Media Days in Hoover on Tuesday. “For him, it’s all about the culture.”
Mason said it’s been a process for developing chemistry on his team to reach those heights, something that he’s learned can’t happen overnight.
And given that he mentioned Belichick’s emphasis on culture, it’s fitting that Mason also mentioned that he hears the rap trio Migos and the album Culture blaring in his team’s locker room.
Setting high standards and building the culture further are what Mason is working to take even further this season. To reach success, he cited another observation from Belichick and the Patriots.
“Command it,” he said. “Demand it.”
