Kirk Herbstreit was quick to offer congratulations to former Vanderbilt player Dansby Swanson after a memorable hit.
On Monday, Swanson smacked a game-winning RBI single to left field with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Atlanta Braves to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres at SunTrust Park. Afterward, the noted ESPN college football analyst wrote a congratulatory message on Twitter, calling Swanson “my boy” and ending the note with the hashtag, “TheFuture.”

That’s a cool gesture from Herbstreit. Before the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Swanson with the first overall pick in 2015, the player was a standout talent for the Commodores. Swanson was named a finalist for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award, presented to the nation’s best college player each year. In December 2015, Arizona traded Swanson to Atlanta.
Swanson hit .302 with 3 home runs and 17 RBIs in 38 games with the Braves last season, his first in the major leagues. He has hit .151 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs this season.
With the victory, Atlanta improved to 6-6.
