Vanderbilt is finally on the board in the 2016 NFL Draft. Defensive end Stephen Weatherly was the first Commodore selected when he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round.
The 6-foot-4, 267-pound defensive end/outside linebacker recorded 46 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks during his junior season at Vandy. Weatherly is a load when unblocked and has excellent closing speed. He lacks punch and burst when rushing the passer and gets latched onto blockers for too long.
Weatherly is the third SEC player taken by the Vikings in the 2016 draft, joining Ole Miss wideout Laquon Treadwell and Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers. Weatherly will have to fight for a roster spot on a talented Vikings front seven. His versatility should help, but he will have an uphill climb fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster.
