Art Demmas, a former co-captain of the Vanderbilt football team and NFL referee, has died at the age of 83 per Mike Organ of The Tennessean.
Demmas was a captain of the 1956 Vanderbilt team, while also earning All-SEC Third Team honors and Second Team Academic All-American at the school. Demmas was also a member of the 1955 squad that won the Gator Bowl.
The bowl win was the first in Vanderbilt history and the last until the Commodores won the 2008 Music City Bowl.
Demmas enjoyed an even better second life, as he was known as one of the NFL’s best officials. Demmas officiated four Super Bowls and served as an NFL referee from 1967 until 2006. Demmas was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
