A former Vanderbilt wide receiver was among 41 individuals arrested this week by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in connection with human trafficking, The Tennesseean reported Friday.
Gary Rashad Canty, 20, from Riverdale, Ga., was one of 34 men arrested. Canty was part of the Commodores’ 2014 recruiting class and redshirted his first season before leaving the team in 2015 because of medical issues. The former 3-star prospect never played in a game for the Commodores, but the team did compile a highlight reel of plays upon his signing in Feb. 2014.
As part of the sting operation, undercover agents posted advertisements on Backpage.com, and some posed as underage girls. Half of the 34 men arrested specified they were seeking sex with minors, according to the TBI. It is not clear whether Canty was one of those men.
