Vanderbilt got off to a slow start on the recruiting trail. Up until last week, the Commodores had only received one commitment for the 2019 class. Jeffrey Blake, a 3-star tight end out of Norcross (Ga.), changed all that when he committed on June 11.
Now it looks like Derek Mason and the rest of the coaching staff were able to land a second commitment within the last week. Memphis (Tenn.) native Christian James announced on Twitter that he would be continuing his football career at Vanderbilt:

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, James is a 3-star prospect. He’s the No. 88 weakside defensive end and No. 1,542 overall player.
Obviously, Vanderbilt still has a lot of work to do as far as recruiting. Before the commitment from James on Monday, the Commodores’ class ranked dead last in the SEC and No. 90 overall.
