The Commodores open the year against a talented Marquette team coached by Steve Wojciechowski before traveling to the Las Vegas Invitational. There are potential games against Butler and Arizona on the schedule. There are four games against Tennessee-based teams: Belmont, Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga.
The Commodores get an early matchup against Minnesota on Dec. 3. Things don’t get easier, as Vanderbilt travels to Dayton to take on Archie Miller and the Flyers. As part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Vanderbilt hosts Iowa State on Jan. 28, 2017, in the midst of SEC conference play.
Vanderbilt is fresh off its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2012, but just hired former Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew to the same position. The Commodores lost in the play-in games, but Damion Jones and Wade Baldwin became just the second pair of Vandy teammates to be drafted in the first round.
The Commodores must now find a way to replace Baldwin (14.1 points, 5.2 assists per game) and Jones (13.9 points, 6.9 rebounds per game) in the starting lineup. No returning player averaged double-digit points last season.
