Vanderbilt will retire Donny Everett’s No. 41, coach Tim Corbin told Adam Sparks of The Tennesseean.
“Forty-one won’t be worn again,” Corbin said. “That number just doesn’t need to be worn by another person”
Everett died in a drowning accident while he was fishing before Vanderbilt’s NCAA tournament game last weekend.
Corbin said his decision to retire Everett’s number was “just off instinct.”
There may not be an official retirement — Corbin has unofficially retired numbers before — but Corbin hopes to honor Everett in some permanent way beginning next season.
The emotions are still raw with Everett’s funeral taking place earlier this week and the team’s season coming to an emotional and difficult ending.
Finding a way to honor him is the least the Commodores can do.
