Vanderbilt sophomore wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb made one of the best catches of the season on Saturday — and it almost wasn’t even ruled a catch.
After referees initially ruled Commodores quarterback Kyle Shurmur’s pass as incomplete, coach Derek Mason challenged the call, which was then overturned. That gave Lipscomb one of the best catches of the year so far, as the sophomore receiver hauled in a difficult pass near the sideline and kept the ball against his head to keep control.
It proved to be a key play, as Vanderbilt later scored a touchdown on the drive, cutting its deficit against South Carolina to 14-13 near the midway point of the third quarter.
